Instrument semiotics: a semiotic approach to interface components

چکیده

This paper will briefly present a semiotic approach to instrument interfaces based on a conceptual analysis of displayand control-components and their compositional semantics. Displayand control-components can be considered as prototypical objects that are themselves constructed from combinations of more elementary signs expressed in some combination of media. Different types of signs (or “representational modalities”) and different types of media have different semantic and syntactic properties. These properties will to some extend determine what different combinations of media and signs are good for, i.e. what kind of information can be adequately expressed in a given media-modality combination and what kind of cognitive support, it will give to the social agents using it in a work context. The relevance of such an approach is partly to enhance our understanding of instrument interfaces and Human-Machine Interaction in complex work domains and partly to support the design and development of flexible and tailorable instrument interfaces. This is an extended position paper following the Workshop on Semiotic Approaches to User Interface Design at CHI’2000.

Hypertext Semiotics in the Commercialized Internet

Hypertext theory makes use of the same set of terms that have been explored in decades of semiotic investigation, such as sign, text, communication, code, metaphor, paradigm, syntax, etc. Building on approaches that have succeeded in applying semiotic principles and methodology to computer science, such as computer semiotics, computational semiotics, and semiotic interface engineering, this dis...

Semiotic Approach to Globalization: Living in a World of Glocal Things

This paper is an effort to discuss the concept of glocalization from a semiotic point of view. In order to carry out a semiotic analysis of globalization or glocalization, first globalization needs to be defined from a semiotic perspective. Therefore, first an explanation of globalization and glocalization in semiotic terms is provided. Some believe the ongoing process in the world cannot be be...

Instrument Semiotics

In this and the following companion paper, Tearing Interfaces Apart, we shall present a theoretical semiotic analysis of interfaces and demonstrate how this analysis can be coupled to an empirical analysis of a work domain and its changing needs for information. The work domain is maritime maneuvering and navigation. We do this by exploiting two senses of the concept “analysis”. “Analysis” mean...

Design issues in a semiotic description of user responses to three interfaces

Semiotics has been used as a theoretical basis for systematising the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of human-computer interaction. This paper focuses on the descriptive qualities of semiotics which are useful for understanding the user perspective of computer systems. The end goal is to assess the application of such semiotic description in interface design. An experiment is presented in...

Semiotics of Interaction: Towards a UI Alphabet

In our thinking and acting, natural language plays a central part. This language defines a structure even before we form something, and it can be regarded as the architecture of design. To be able to grasp the expression of these structures in HCI, we chose the perspective of linguistics and semiotics. The semiotics perspective in the context of HCI is increasingly popular in presenting a diffe...
